A new formulation of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) constituted by silane coated APP (APP203) and pentaerythritol phosphate (PEPA) was chosen through comparative experiments. NiAl layer double hydroxide (NiAl LDH) had good lamellar barrier effect and char forming catalysis, which was chosen as flame retardant synergist agent. IFR and NiAl LDH were combined to improve thermal stability and flame retardancy of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix. Corn starch (CS) as a bio-carbon source was used to form IFR composites with APP203. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) was another biodegradable material, which displayed the toughening effect when it was used in PLA matrix. PLA/PBS/APP203/CS/NiAl LDH composites were prepared. The results showed that the above two flame retardant formulantions had good synergistic effect in PLA matrix. In addition, CS as char resource could improve the thermal oxidative property of PLA composites, which was better than PEPA.
